Fish Oil Benefits for Children

July 7th, 2011

Fish oil for childrenThe reality is that children need omega-3 fatty acids just as much as adults.  Unfortunately, many families are not fish eating families, leaving this important part of nutrition left out.  It’s not always recommended to begin giving your children fish oil pills in order to supplement the lack of fish in their diet.  You must ask your physician about this.  Many young athletes, particularly those involved in intense running (say track or cross country) can really benefit from the anti-inflammatory benefits of fish oil.  If you avoid the fish oil pills, look for omega-3 enriched products as we’ve discussed on here before.  Also, be sure to see the doctor because maybe fish oil dosage is appropriate for your son or daughter.

Young Children Benefit From Fish Oil

March 2nd, 2009

Diets rich in fish oils can help boost children’s immune system.  This recent report in the Journal of Pediatrics gives more support for us fish oil proselytizers.  My only fear, with children, in giving them lots of fish are the potential toxins.  This is why I prefer supplements for myself (good supplements strip toxins out).  I do not know of any supplement for children with the appropriate fish oil dosage.  Fish oil can thin the blood and certain supplements have toxins determinal to children’s health, so be sure to consult your doctor before even considering such an action.
