The reality is that children need omega-3 fatty acids just as much as adults. Unfortunately, many families are not fish eating families, leaving this important part of nutrition left out. It’s not always recommended to begin giving your children fish oil pills in order to supplement the lack of fish in their diet. You must ask your physician about this. Many young athletes, particularly those involved in intense running (say track or cross country) can really benefit from the anti-inflammatory benefits of fish oil. If you avoid the fish oil pills, look for omega-3 enriched products as we’ve discussed on here before. Also, be sure to see the doctor because maybe fish oil dosage is appropriate for your son or daughter.

Thus far its been difficulty to find ways to increase your Omega-3 intake using baked goods. The inability to remove the fishy-like taste does not make for delicious pastries.
Although we tend to disagree, many eco-friendly people are looking for fish oil alternatives. Now we find a company producing baking friendly products full of the Omega-3 fatty acids that you need. Currently you can find omega-3 enriched at such wonderful places as Wegman’s, the popular east coast grocery chain. If you look carefully there you will find many Omega-3 enriched products, beyond the bakery. Cargill is also supporting a shortening enriched with Omega-3 under its Clear Valley line of products. These products mix fish-based and other omega-3 sources. Bakers should look to both to see which they prefer.

Fish oil was in the New York Times today. The article discussed the possibility of fish oil containing high levels of mercury. The gist of the article is that after many studies most fish oil supplements found on the market do not contain significant levels of mercury. Fish oil dosage can be limited should you think this is a concern.

Diets rich in fish oils can help boost children’s immune system. This recent report in the Journal of Pediatrics gives more support for us fish oil proselytizers. My only fear, with children, in giving them lots of fish are the potential toxins. This is why I prefer supplements for myself (good supplements strip toxins out). I do not know of any supplement for children with the appropriate fish oil dosage. Fish oil can thin the blood and certain supplements have toxins determinal to children’s health, so be sure to consult your doctor before even considering such an action.

We hear all the time about people taking designer drugs to improve their cholesterol levels. Sounds great, right? Pop a pill and be happy. I am not trying to make a hard statement on perscription drugs here, but what I will say is that diet can play a huge role in helping lower your cholesterol level. One of the main ways to do so is increase the percentage of omega-3 fatty acids that you take. Of course here, we talk a lot about finding the right fish oil dosage for you, but you can certainly start with your own diet. Take that responsibility first. Want to pop a pill, fish oil or perscription (obviously I prefer the natural remedy), fine, but also take some personal responsibility as well.
